Hi, I'm Shankar Sastry, Dean of the College of Engineering at Berkeley. I'm a professor of electrical engineering and computer science, bioengineering and mechanical engineering and have been on the Berkeley faculty for 24 years.

After earning an undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay in 1977, I applied to a number of schools for graduate work. I was looking for a school that combined the two things that mattered most to me: excellent research and education; and opportunities to work for the betterment of mankind. I found a home at Berkeley and I have remained here ever since.

Berkeley is a very special place, where people really care about society and using their amazing talents to make the world a better place.
