A History of Leadership: Dean's Gallery

Below are the first 17 deans to shape the College of Engineering. The present College evolved from Berkeley's early technical colleges; the Colleges of Mechanics and Civil Engineering amalgamated to form the College of Engineering in 1931 and were joined by the College of Mining in 1942.

  • Director, Blum Center for Developing Economies
  • Joined the Berkeley faculty in 1983; professor of EECS, BioE and ME
  • Internationally recognized expert on embedded and autonomous software
 

A. Richard Newton

A. Richard Newton
2000-2007

  • Pioneered methodologies and technologies for circuit design and electronic systems architecture
  • Former director of the MARCO/DARPA Gigascale Silicon Research Center
  • Joined the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) faculty in 1979 and served as chair of the department from 1999-2000
 

Paul Gray

Paul R. Gray
1996-2000

  • UC Berkeley Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Emeritus
  • Andrew S. Grove Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering
  • Member of the National Academy of Engineering and a leader in solid-state circuits
  • Joined the EECS faculty in 1971 and served as chair of the department from 1990-93
 

David A. Hodges

David A. Hodges
1990-1996

  • Daniel M. Tellep Distinguished Professor of Engineering Emeritus
  • Professor in the Graduate School — a title that may be awarded to Emeritus faculty who remain active at Berkeley — since 1998
  • Recognized for his work with semiconductor manufacturing systems
  • Joined the EECS faculty in 1970 and served as chair of the department from 1989-90
 

Karl S. Pister

Karl S. Pister
1980-1990

  • Chancellor Emeritus, U.C. Santa Cruz
  • Roy W. Carlson Professor of Engineering Emeritus
  • Former Vice President, Educational Outreach, University of California
  • Over 30 years at UC Berkeley as a faculty member in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and 15 years as an academic administrator
 

Ernest Shiu-Jen Kuh

Ernest Shiu-Jen Kuh
1973-1980

  • William S. Floyd, Jr. Professor Emeritus in Engineering
  • Co-author of four books on circuits, electronics, networks, systems, and computer-aided design
  • Developed the Berkeley Industrial Liaison Program and the Berkeley CAD/CAM Center in 1982
  • Joined the EECS faculty in 1956 and chaired the department from 1968-1972
 

George James Maslach

George James Maslach
1963-1972

  • Former UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor for Research and Academic Affairs
  • Former Provost of the Professional Schools and Colleges
  • Helped raise funds for alumni scholarships and was active in efforts to desegregate Berkeley K-12 schools in the 1950s
  • Professor of Aeronautical Science Emeritus in the Department of Mechanical Engineering
 

John Roy Whinnery

John Roy Whinnery
1959-1963

  • Known for his work on microwave theory and laser experimentation
  • Honored with National Academy of Engineering Founders Award and National Medal of Science
  • Former vice chairman in charge of the Electronics Research Laboratory from 1952-56
  • Joined EE faculty in 1946
 

Morrough Parker O'Brien

Morrough Parker O'Brien
1943-1959

  • Led the College to its top-ranked status in many engineering disciplines
  • Received Clark Kerr Award in 1988; recognized for playing a pivotal role in building the academic strength of the campus
  • Established the Engineering Advisory Council, the Engineering Alumni Society, and various research institutions
  • Founder of modern coastal engineering
 

Donald Hamilton McLaughlin

Donald Hamilton McLaughlin
1942-43

  • Received American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers' highest honor in 1961
  • Published nearly 70 important papers and delivered over 100 major speeches on technical and economic affairs
  • Appointed to the Board of Regents in 1951 by Gov. Earl Warren
  • Reorganized the College of Mining into a department within the College of Engineering
 

Charles Derleth Jr.

Charles Derleth, Jr.
Civil Engineering 1929-1942

  • Consulted for the world-renowned Hoover Dam, the largest at the time
  • Consulting Engineer for several San Francisco Bay Area bridges and structures
  • First Dean of Engineering when the Colleges of Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering were combined
  • Joined the Civil Engineering faculty in 1903
 

Frank Holman Probert

Frank Holman Probert
Miining 1918-1940

  • Served as a consulting engineer for the U.S. Bureau of Mines after WWI
  • Traveled to France in 1917 as a member of the American Mining Mission to Europe for Investigation of Mineral Industries and Reparation to Northern France
  • Remembered for giving wise counsel, financial support, and much time to individuals and organizations in the Berkeley community
  • Joined the Mining faculty in 1916
 

Andrew Cowper Lawson

Andrew Cowper Lawson
Mining 1914-1918

  • Developed the first systematic field course in geology in the West
  • Established Berkeley's first scientific publication series, The Bulletin of the Department of Geology
  • Chaired the State Earthquake Investigation Commission in 1906, and prepared the most complete and informative report ever published on a great earthquake
  • Joined the Mineralogy and Geology faculty in 1892
 

Clarence Linus Cory

Clarence Linus Cory
Mechanics 1901-1929

  • Pioneered Berkeley's electrical engineering program
  • Saw science as the foundation of engineering and raised requirements in mathematics, physics, and mechanics
  • Championed equitable rates for public power and light utilities
  • Spent 37 years connected to the Department of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering
 

Samuel Benedict Christy

Samuel Benedict Christy
Mining 1896-1914

  • Credited for establishing the high standing of the College of Mining among the technical schools of the world
  • Laid out laboratories and adequately equipped the College of Mining
  • Traveled the world to inspect other mining schools for design ideas for the Hearst Memorial Mining Building
 

Frank Soule

Frank Soule
Civil Engineering 1896-1901

  • Organized the military department and was commandant of the cadets
  • Served as assistant professor of mathematics, professor of astronomy, and professor of civil engineering
  • Graduated from West Point
 

Friedrich Godfrey Hesse

Friedrich Godfrey Hesse
Mechanics 1896-1901

  • First professor of hydraulics and mechanics: considered the true father of the College of Mechanics and the Department of Mechanical Engineering into which it evolved
  • Developed the engineering curriculum in 1875
