Former Chancellor Clark Kerr once remarked, only half in jest, that the ideal university provided romance for the students, sports for the alumni, and parking for the faculty.

Unfortunately, when it comes to parking, Berkeley can present a challenge.


Hints & Suggestions

There is always street parking and metered parking near the College (see map on left), but be sure to read all parking restriction signs, as the rules and times are strictly enforced by the City of Berkeley.

In general, parking is cheaper and more plentiful the farther you drive from campus — even if it's only a block or two away. For example, while the busiest section of Hearst Avenue have one-hour metered spots which close during rush hour, driving two blocks farther up Hearst may offer free two-hour spots.

There are several public parking garages on the south and west sides of the university; from the College, they are a ten-to-fifteen minute walk across campus.

Southside , near Sproul Plaza:

• City of Berkeley Sather Gate Garage , located on Durant between Dana and Telegraph. Enter from Channing Way or Durant Ave.
  
  
• University of California Student Union Garage, located on Bancroft just West of Telegraph.

Westside , near University Hall and downtown:

• City of Berkeley Center Street Garage , 2025 Center Street between Shattuck and Milvia Street.
  
  
• City of Berkeley surface parking lot at Oxford Street , Allston Way, and Kittredge. Enter from Kittredge.

Please do not park in University Parking Facilities or on campus .

Although parking can be limited near the Berkeley campus, there are several public transportation options.

• BART : Bay Area Rapid Transit trains operate from Fremont, Richmond, Bay Point/Concord and San Francisco/Daly City.
  
  The Downtown Berkeley BART station is just 1-1/2 blocks west of campus. To get to the College of Engineering, walk east on Center Street for 1 block to the campus, walk north (left) on Oxford for approximately 4 blocks, then walk east (right) up Hearst Avenue for four to five blocks. The Engineering buildings are on both the right and left (see campus map ).
  
  
• AC Transit : AC Transit bus service offers several lines that come near campus from San Francisco and throughout Alameda and Western Contra Costa County.
