On November 19, 2008 we honoredArun Sarin

Arun Sarin
Materials Science & Engineering '78, MBA '78

Recipient of the 2008 Berkeley Engineering Innovation Award

Arun Sarin has provided bold leadership in wireless technologies to facilitate communication worldwide, having led AirTouch, Accel-KKR Telecom and most recently Vodafone, the world’s largest mobile phone company. He brought Vodafone to emerging markets in India and Eastern Europe and broadened its scope to include broadband, internet and wireless data. A committed global citizen and philanthropist, he is helping to build electronic materials research laboratories in his native India.

On September 26, 2008 we honoredPaul Jacobs

Dr. Paul E. Jacobs
Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences '84, '86, '89

Recipient of the 2008 Berkeley Engineering Innovation Award

Mobile commerce. Cardiac monitors. Even AMBER alerts to find missing children. Wireless technology now enables all of these services, thanks to the vision and drive of Paul Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm since 2005. The holder of more than 35 patents for his inventions, he is now extending the reach of wireless to help developing regions around the world. By fostering a community-oriented, philanthropic culture, Dr. Jacobs and the company he leads are widely recognized as exemplary global citizens.
