BEAR News February 2010

Dear Berkeley Engineer:

Are you interested in coming back to campus and sharing your expertise with current undergraduate students? We have the opportunity for you! Sign up to volunteer at one or more of the following upcoming student career programs by emailing bears@berkeley.edu:

  • Prepare as a Freshman or Sophomore to be Competitive in High Tech, March 5, 12:30-2pm: Inform students how to best prepare for an internship in high tech.
  • Engineering Roundtable, April 2, 1-3pm: Host a group table discussion about your field and company.
  • Engineering Resume Critique, April 15, 4-6pm: Meet one-on-one with students and provide feedback on their resumes.

Beginning Tuesday, February 16, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI @Berkeley) and the New York Times will offer an exciting six-week online course with Professor Dan Kammen on The Energy Challenge: Balancing Resources and Policies. Join an international community of participants in their online classroom for weekly discussions and gain access to a specially created archive of New York Times articles on energy and related issues, organized by subject to correspond with the topic of the week. Write your own Op-Ed and share your ideas with your international colleagues in the private online forum. Register online today!

On February 1, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced the formation of a Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future. Per Peterson, professor and chair of nuclear engineering at UC Berkeley, with expertise in advanced reactor systems, nuclear waste processing and inertial fusion energy, will join the Commission in formulating recommendations for developing safe, long-term solutions to managing the nation's used nuclear fuel and waste.

Join UC Berkeley's online alumni community, @cal, today and receive free email forwarding service and the ability to network with alumni and current students. To register, go to http://cal.berkeley.edu. (If you graduated after May 2009, just log in with your CalNet ID and passphrase.) @cal, great minds online.

GO BEARS!
