BEAR News January 2010Dear Berkeley Engineer: Spring Semester started this week and students and faculty are back in full swing! 2010 promises to be a year packed with opportunities for you to boost your networking and career skills, reconnect with fellow Berkeley Engineering alumni, make an impact on an engineering student's career, and hear from our illustrious faculty. The Berkeley EECS Annual Research Symposium (BEARS 2010) will be held Wednesday, February 10. This year's symposium, "From Clouds to Sensors - A Berkeley View," will host an energy panel discussion by Berkeley Engineering faculty David Culler, Randy Katz and Eli Yablonovitch, and talks covering everything from chips and mobile devices to cloud computing. The symposium will also present a unique opportunity for guests to visit more than 15 research centers at the College. Visit the BEARS 2010 webpage for more information and to register. The Helios Energy Research Facility, headquarters for Berkeley-based alternative-energy research, may be close to finding a new home west of the Berkeley campus! The Helios project was initially slated to be housed in a large structure, to be built in Strawberry Canyon, for LBNL and UC Berkeley scientists working on solar energy, biofuels, and other ways to curb global climate change. A proposed new eco-friendly, five-story, 112,800-square-foot structure on the corner of Hearst and Shattuck Avenues could be the new home to research focused on carbon-neutral biofuels, conducted chiefly under the auspices of the BP-funded Energy Biosciences Institute and Berkeley's bioengineering program. If you've recently been promoted and want to jump-start your supervisory skills or are considering a future role in management, I encourage you to take advantage of a special invitation extended to Berkeley Engineering alumni from the Haas School of Business to participate in the New Manager Boot Camp: The Art and Science of Effective Management April 12-14, 2010. This intensive management training program is designed specifically for you -- recently promoted engineers, scientists and knowledge workers who want to excel as leaders in the dynamic high tech and life sciences industries. Learn more by emailing executive@berkeley.edu or calling 1-877-UCB-EXEC (822-3932). Save on your registration by noting priority code COEalum10 for a 25% discount! Keep in touch and stay informed; join over 2,300 members of the Berkeley Engineering family on LinkedIn. When you join our exclusive Berkeley Engineering alumni, faculty and student LinkedIn group you can reconnect with old classmates, network with alumni, faculty or current students, and view or post job announcements.
