BEAR News June 2010

Dear Berkeley Engineer:

The Bay Area summer weather pattern is here! Morning fog turns to beautiful sunny afternoons on the Glade where a crop of incoming students attending the Cal Student Orientation (CalSO) program eat their lunch and learn Cal fight songs. For the fall 2010 semester the College of Engineering will welcome 656 freshmen with an average weighted GPA of 4.46, and 191 transfer students with an average GPA of 3.79. Read the story of a handful of current students' first semester experiences on the CalSO website.

As we welcome our new freshmen and transfer students, we also applaud the Class of 2010 graduates! We would like to give special recognition to eight members of the Class of 2010 who were named recipients of the Departmental Citation, an honor that recognizes distinction in their respective majors. Take a peek at the video of the College of Engineering Class of 2010 Commencement ceremony, or view a sample of commencement photos online.

Bears on bikes? On Sunday, June 6, 23 members of the UC Berkeley community, including students, staff and alumni, hit the road on their bicycles for a seven-day, 545-mile journey down the coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles on the AIDS Life Cycle ride. Members of the group, including Celeste Roschuni, a Berkeley mechanical engineering Ph.D. student, reported back daily from the road, sharing highlights of the day's ride.

What adventures have you been on recently? Have anything interesting in store for this summer? We want to know what's going on with you; find your classmates and submit your class note online today!

Gifts of all sizes to the Berkeley Engineering Annual Fund combine to make a big difference for today's students and faculty. For a limited time, however, some gifts will count a bit more than others. How? The New Alumni Challenge will quadruple the impact of gifts made by alumni from the Classes of 2005 - 2010, and the Foxconn Challenge will match all Dean's Society gifts of $2,500 or more. Whatever your class year - and whatever size gift is right for you - please help us reach our goal of raising $2.8 million by June 30. Make your gift online today. Remember, every gift counts!

GO BEARS!
