BEAR NewsFebruary 2009 Greetings Berkeley Engineers, The spring semester is well underway and with it a host of exciting activities. The BEARS - Berkeley EECS Annual Research Symposium - 2009 will take place on Thursday, February 12, 2009 on campus. This year’s symposium "EECS is at the Center and the Centers are at EECS" will include a keynote presentation from Professor Randy Katz, "A Systems View of the Energy Challenge," as well as a unique opportunity for guests to visit more than 18 research centers at the college. Since 2001, CITRIS has been creating solutions for environmental, social and health care challenges by promoting collaborative research and teaching in information technology. On Friday, February 27, 2009 please join us as we celebrate with the opening of the CITRIS headquarters building, Sutardja Dai Hall and the Banatao Institute@CITRIS Berkeley. For those of you who cannot join us on campus that day the ribbon cutting ceremony and festivities will be posted on the web soon after the event. We hope to see you there! Volunteer: Berkeley Engineering has teamed up with the UC Berkeley Career Center to offer a portfolio of career services to the Berkeley Engineering student community. We are looking for alumni who are interested in helping students get a leg-up on their new careers by offering career advice and expertise. The Parallel Computing Lab (Par Lab) held its opening ceremony on December 1, 2008 in Soda Hall. The Par Lab's research agenda will be driven by creating compelling applications that need much more computing horsepower to run well, focusing on the areas of personal health, image retrieval, music, speech understanding, and web browsers. The Par Lab will be funded $10M over five years by the Universal Parallel Computing Research Center (UPCRC) founded by Intel and Microsoft.
