List originally compiled: December 4, 2006, with modifications made in 2007 and 2008. Original information was taken from each campus’ web-page and/or from the on-line rankings and data compiled by US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT of 2006. (Cornell information came from Jeff Newman 1/8/08, director of Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Engineering, as program is pending final approval of the state of New York.)
Summary: Of the 47 ranked schools and colleges of engineering identified in this report, out of more than 330 recognized engineering schools in the US, the following schools have web-based / online M.S. or M.E. degree programs. (They may also have other off-site degree programs; this memo only lists their web-based / online engineering degree programs.) The different ways in which courses are delivered by the two UC schools listed (UC Davis and UC Irvine) are noted below.

Degree requires 30 credit hours of instruction, with two credit hours

This is MIT’s first MS degree program with a distance-learning option.
(Instituted1999. Approximately 60 students each year utilize this option.)

Currently, MIT does not offer any degree-granting programs that are taught solely at a distance. However, there are a few options for those who are interested in distance-learning programs. See the masters degree program, System Design and Management (SDM) program, which gives students the option to study off-campus for a large portion of the time.
