Berkeley Engineering stands at the leading edge of cross-disciplinary research, from bioengineering and nanotechnology to societal-scale systems. There are many ways to engage with the groundbreaking work being done by our faculty and students. CITRIS
Headquartered at Berkeley, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) focuses on creating information technology to tackle society's most critical needs. This research will have a major impact on the economy and quality of life of Californians and the global community.

A collaborative effort among 100 faculty at four UC campuses, CITRIS focuses on energy efficiency, transportation, earthquake preparedness, environmental monitoring, health care, education, homeland defense, and cultural research.

Research at Berkeley
Berkeley is consistently rated among the top institutions in the world for the quality and breadth of its research enterprise, for the scholarly distinction of its faculty, for the excellence of its Ph.D. programs, and for the amount of funding received for support of its research programs.

Berkeley ranks first among U.S. universities in the number of its research programs considered "distinguished" (32), according to the most recent National Research Council study of American universities. It also ranks first in the number of its Graduate Programs (35) considered to be among the top ten in their fields. Among its current faculty are 7 Nobel laureates, 130 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 74 members of the National Academy of Engineering, 14 recipients of the National Medal of Science, and 229 Fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
