Modern engineering systems, such as computers, high-performance engines, and nuclear reactors require new and better materials than have previously been available. This creates a need for education and research concerned with the selection and design of materials and their production. Such education and research is conducted by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Research projects currently underway in the department include the development of materials for use in:

  • fusion reactors (cryogenic materials)
  • aerospace applications (advanced aluminum alloys and composite materials)
  • the electronics industry (pure and doped semiconductors, photovoltaics, etc.)
- and -
  • the design of lighter materials for use in more fuel efficient vehicles
  • the production of metals and other materials that are more energy efficient
  • studies associated with the subsurface environment.
