On November 11, IEOR pro-fessor Dorit S. Hochbaum was awarded a doctor scientiarum honoris causa (honorary doctorate in natural sciences) by the University of Copenhagen. The queen of Denmark was present when Hochbaum received the doctorate, which recognizes her groundbreaking achievements and leadership in optimization in general and, specifically in the field of approximation algorithms for intractable problems. This area of study focuses on obtaining good solutions to problems that are theoretically and practically difficult and often impossible to solve.
