job notice
University Relations Calling Center is currently hiring student callers
to raise funds for UC Berkeley. Get valuable job training and experience
in negotiation and communication skills. The job pays $9/hour plus bonuses
and incentives. (Good callers can make upwards of $15/hour). The job
offers evening hours and a casual work environment. Student callers
are responsible for informing alumni, parents, and friends of new developments
on campus and encouraging them to get involved by making a financial
contribution to UC Berkeley. No experience necessary! Approximately
11 to 14 hours a week during the evening and weekends. Qualifications:
Must be a UC Berkeley student; must commit to a minimum of four shifts
each week; must have evening availability (4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.); strong
desire to be performance- and goal-oriented. If you are interested,

Thermal-heat transfer seminar
On Wednesday, September 14, the ME department presents, “Laser-Nanostructure
Interactions: Science, Engineering, and Applications,” by Shaochen
Chen (Ph.D.’99 ME). Chen will discuss his research progress in
laser interactions with nanostructures and associated issues of nanoscale
optical enhancement, thermal/fluid transport, and nano-manufacturing.
The seminar will be at 3 p.m. in Room 3110 in Etcheverry Hall. Coffee,
tea and cookies will be served beforehand at 2:30 p.m. Chen is an associate
professor in mechanical engineering at the University of Texas, Austin.
Steel Bridge team results
During the Mid-Pacific Regional Competition last spring, Cal’s
Steel Bridge team won first place in the lightness category and third
