Minute with MSE professor Andreas Glaeser
What first inspired
you to go into engineering?
When I arrived at MIT as an undeclared freshman, I didn’t even
know that a discipline called materials science existed. I took the
equivalent course to E45, an introduction to materials science. I began
to understand why some materials behaved similarly, others very differently,
and how, by manipulating or adjusting the chemistry, processing, and
microstructural characteristics, you could tailor properties to suit
different applications and needs. I was hooked. I started looking at
everything around me differently. Why did they make it out of that?
How did they shape this?
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I often read papers or review lecture notes as I walk home or walk to
work. That gives you an idea of how much spare time I have. What little
I do have, I spend reading and writing. One of my favorite things is
to read and learn about food. I love almost everything about food except
the generally strong correlation between what I enjoy eating and a high
caloric content.
What movie should every student see?
None. You can see almost any movie at any time. Enjoy the live performances
at the Greek Theatre, at Zellerbach, at the Berkeley Rep, the San Francisco
Opera. Rather than direct you to a movie, I suggest you save your money
and go to the symphony instead.
What is your favorite place to eat in/around campus?
Cafe Panini makes great sandwiches in a setting that reminds me a little
of Italy. I really enjoy the pizza at The Cheeseboard. Picante on 6th
is my favorite Mexican restaurant. Kabana on University gets my vote
for best Indian and Pakistani food. It is almost unfair how much great
food there is in the area. Did I mention that I like food?
