DARPA Grand Challenge results
After a two-year push to win the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge, Berkeley’s Blue Team failed to complete the final qualifying run. The team’s entry, “Ghostrider,” an autonomous motor-cycle, finished two miles of the 2.3-mile trial course. Team leader Anthony Levandowski (B.S.’02, M.S.’03 IEOR) says he’s disappointed, but overall the vehicle was “a success for us.” Stanford won the challenge and the $2 million purse. Levandowski says he’ll return to his IEOR doctorate work in January and hopes to continue researching autonomous systems. “With this whole thing I learned that not only do you need an innovative idea, but it has to be done 100%,” he says. “You can’t take shortcuts.” To learn more about Ghostrider, go to http://www.ghostriderrobot.com/.
