| SMART ART: The rainy season has arrived in Berkeley, and finals are just around the corner. So you may feel compelled to attach yourself to a computer from now to the end of the semester. We won’t talk you out of doing your work, but make sure you take an occasional break to give your eyes and brain a rest. We highly recommend the artful reprieve in Soda Hall. A warm drink from Brewed Awakening is the perfect accompaniment to a jaunt through the atrium between the sixth and seventh floors. Here are a few pieces that catch the eye and tickle the mind. Lingering permitted. Clockwise, from top: “Rainbow Bits” by George W. Hart, commissioned by CS professor Carlo Sequin, is a polyhedral geometry sculpture made out of 642 CD-ROMs. Sequin conceived the idea when contemplating what to do with unwanted CDs. “Unnamed” is a spring 1997 installation by art students. “Floating Figure-Eights” is a 1994 sculpture by Sequin. The last are plastic objects designed by Sequin and his students in class. They were fabricated in the Ford Lab in Etcheverry. (Rachel Jackson Photos) | |
