Undergrad researchers show off their hard work at fall poster session

Undergraduate researchers got out of the lab and into the spotlight during the fall 2005 Engineering, Science, and Natural Resources Undergraduate Poster Session on November 16 entitled "Natural Bridges: Different Perspectives, Common Goals." Presenters answered questions about their projects for a steady stream of visitors in the Betty and Gordon Moore Lobby at Hearst Memorial Mining Building. NAME: Ipsheeta Furtado, Eng. Physics sophomore
TITLE: "Simple Characterization of Pulsed Laser Deposited Novel Bismuth-Ferrite Oxides"
JOINED RESEARCH: March 2005
IN ONE SENTENCE: Characterized new ferroelectric material using x-ray diffraction.
FUTURE USE: Improve information and memory storage devices for semiconductor industry.
MAIN LESSON LEARNED: "I learned a lot of theory that I haven't had in class yet and how it's applied."

NAME: Kenta Honjo, ME junior
TITLE: "Dynamic Characterization of Industrial Microstage Positioning System"
JOINED RESEARCH: Summer 2005
IN ONE SENTENCE: Identified dynamic model of the Japanese company Adept's Nano Work Cell, a manufacturing robot working at the nanoscale level.
FUTURE USE: Improve the manufacturing process of nanoscale products.
MAIN LESSON LEARNED: "I was very interested in observing the relationship between academia and industry and learning how things are done."

NAME: Julia Rasooly, BioE senior
TITLE: "Effects of Viscosity on the Piezo-electric Microjet"
JOINED RESEARCH: May 2005
IN ONE SENTENCE: Test the Microjet's effectiveness with different viscosities to learn how it would work with different protein-based drugs.
FUTURE USE: Treat ear infections, diabetes.
MAIN LESSON LEARNED: "Research is very challenging. You have to be focused and not take anything for granted."
