Career Corner with CEE alum Jim Hartley

Career Corner features interviews with alumni about their career choices and their career advice.

Jim Hartley (M.Eng.’82 CEE) is vice president at CH2M HILL, an engineering, consulting and construction firm. As a program manager, he oversees the remediation of industrial sites for major clients, coordinating and organizing the work of 40 people out of four northern California offices (San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and Redding). He’s also worked in government affairs where he directly promoted legislation for a balanced marketplace.

What do you like about your job?
I like challenges. It’s interesting to look at sites that have issues that are more than just technical. I regularly negotiate with the public. Doing this asks me to learn new things and see new opportunities.

How did you go about finding your interest/passion?
Serendipitous opportunism. In my career I leapt through doors that opened and challenged me to continue learning. It also helps to have a can-do attitude and to be clear on who your customers are.

What do you recommend students do during school to prepare for a career?

Don’t ignore the people sitting next to you … they might be running a future Apple or Google. Don’t be afraid to go out into the marketplace. People in business welcome calls from students. They love to talk about their jobs, and you will want to hear what they say.

What’s the secret to landing a job?
It takes some luck. But self-confidence, being prepared and showing up on time are most of it, really. Don’t be discouraged. The right job will come.

What are some things to think about while considering a job?
Before you say ‘yes,’ ask yourself, “Have I met the people I’ll be working with? Do I want to work with these people? Do I see myself becoming like them? What do other people say about this company?” Open your eyes to possibilities when an opportunity presents itself. Follow your heart.
