Top 10 tips for incoming freshmen

1. Take an easy course load your first semester and try to find a community for yourself. Berkeley has hundreds of organizations. Try something new; what’s there to lose?

2. Focus on the material, not on the grades. Understand the concepts, problem sets and the “why.”

3. Get enough sleep and establish a regular sleeping schedule.

4.  If you need a job or internship, your number one resource is the Career Center. Sign up at http://career.berkeley.edu/.

5. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. Your graduate student instructors (GSIs), the Student Learning Center (SLC) and the Academic Center tutors in your residence halls are great academic resources. Everyone asks for help.

6. Seek out as many of Berkeley’s offerings as possible. Berkeley students and organizations put on a range of fantastic performances.

7. Get exercise! The best way to deal with stress and have fun is to exercise.

8. Try to develop a consistent study schedule so you won’t fall behind. All-nighters are not necessary if you start your homework early.

9. Explore classes outside your major. Although you might think you’re doing electrical engineering for the rest of your life, you never know.

10. It’s the people. Befriend and learn from your floormates and peers. You are more likely to remember your freshmen dorm experiences than the steps involved in the Otto Cycle!
