EJC, led by Michelle Yong, will narrow focus to a few goals this yearMeet Engineering Physics senior Michelle Yong. As the new president of the Engineers’ Joint Council (EJC), Yong leads an organization that oversees some 25 engineering student societies and competition teams, as well as a budget of $29,000. Like any well-trained engineer, she’s already identified the inefficiencies in the EJC system and is working to correct them. “Our key strategy this year is to focus on a few things and do those things well, rather than spreading ourselves thin with events and activities,” she explains. Her first big goal is improving the EJC infrastructure. Already, she and her fellow officers have implemented changes such as opening up EJC committees to any engineering student (not just a student society representative) and putting many EJC processes online, such as registering a new student group, signing up for the Big Buddy/Little Buddy program and advertising a club event within the new EJC calendar. Financial information is now online, too. “Groups rely on EJC to distribute funding fairly, so it hurts everyone if we’re not run well,” Yong says. “This year we’re working to ingrain a higher standard of professionalism.” A second big goal is urging student groups to invest in their members. “I’d really like clubs to take the extra time to talk to their members and get to know them instead of seeing them as people who just work for them,” she says. “The extra time you take now will help a member stay involved, connected and committed.” Other changes in the works: an improved Engineering Week program next spring, better north side business hours and lighting, and finalizing the EJC office move from 220 to 101 Bechtel. “I’ve learned a lot about time management and e-mail writing,” says the new leader, just weeks into her position. “There are a lot of exciting things going on!” Contact Yong at president@ejc.berkeley.edu.
