Career
Corner with EECS/MSE alum James Sze
Career Corner features interviews with alumni about their career
choices and their career advice.
After graduating from Cal, James Sze (B.S.’91 EECS, MSE) worked
as a software engineer at San Diego-based QUALCOMM while earning his
M.S. in EECS from UC San Diego and a law degree from the University
of San Diego. After six years at QUALCOMM, he became a patent attorney.
As a patent attorney, Sze deposes witnesses, writes patent applications,
licenses intellectual property, argues in court and analyzes technology
protection strategies.
What do you like about your job?
First and foremost, my job is fun, as it combines the best in law and
engineering and allows me to help people. It’s always a thrill
when a client raves about you. The job itself involves problem solving
using a hybrid of technology and law; in order to be a good patent
attorney, you really need to understand your science and engineering.
Berkeley Engineering helped give me a “leg up” on my competition.
What do you recommend students do during school to prepare for a career?
Engineering opens up a wide variety of career opportunities. Take a
lot of different classes to learn what you like, and learn how to work
with people. People skills go a long way no matter what career you
pursue. College is the perfect time to develop your people skills.
What’s the secret to landing a job?
The secret to landing a job is no secret. Every job I’ve ever
had was referred to me by a friend. Your classmates, friends, family
and co-workers will always be your best source for jobs, customers
and clients. So be good to your friends and develop your people skills!
What are some things to think about while considering a potential job?
You should always play to your strengths. If you like what you do,
you’ll be good at it and you’ll soar!
