Genius Corner: Gain fame with our brain game

Try this one. Send your answer to editnews@coe.berkeley.edu, and include your name, major and class year. The first person to e-mail the right answer will have his or her name printed in the next issue of Engineering News along with the answer. Twelve thieves stole a diamond from the Queen of England. During the getaway, they dropped it, and it broke into seven equal pieces. They took the seven pieces to a jeweler and asked him to divide them evenly, so each of the 12 thieves gets an equal amount. How did the jeweler divide the pieces?
