PHOTO COUTESY OF ANDREW LIM

Professor Minute with IEOR assistant professor Andrew Lim

IEOR assistant professor Andrew Lim received his Ph.D. in systems engineering from the Australian National University in 1998. Prior to his arrival at Berkeley, he conducted research at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Maryland, College Park, and Columbia University. During the 2001–2002 academic year, he was an assistant professor at Columbia University and joined the IEOR department at UC Berkeley in 2002. His research and teaching interests include stochastic control, Markov decision processes and applied probability. In recent years, he has focused on problems in financial engineering.

What first inspired you to go into engineering?
I liked mathematics and didn’t have the talent to become a musician.

To date, what has been the most memorable moment in your career?
It’s made up of many little memorable moments, like the times when you finally understand something and have a breakthrough after a long period of struggle, or when students in a class look like they enjoy and understand what you are teaching. I’ve also made a few very good friends at Berkeley, as well as in the academic community, and this is probably the most satisfying thing of all.

If you had a few extra hours, what would you do?
Spend time with my wife Gayle.

What should engineering students make sure they do at Berkeley before they graduate?
I have no idea. Perhaps I should be asking them that question. (A question for a final perhaps?)

What are you currently reading?
Dangerous Liaisons by Choderlos de Laclos. (Yes, the movie was based on it.)

What is one thing you would like to learn how to do?

To cook more than three dishes.
