Why Real World Engineering could help you

What does the term “real world” mean to you? Does it signify getting out there to practice what you’ve learned, or does it remind you of a sagging economy and lackluster job prospects? Whether your every career step is planned ahead or you don’t know what you want to be, Real World Engineering has something for you.

A panel of alums from every major will gather on February 12 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Sibley Auditorium to address your most burning career questions.

“Freshmen and sophomores who haven’t decided their major can attend up to three panels and find out more about their options,” says Real World student organizer, IEOR junior Jengyee Liang. “Because jobs are hard to get, juniors and seniors can also use this opportunity to talk to professionals and network.”

IEOR student Nakissa Gradert attended the event last year.

“At the time I was still undecided on my major, but after attending the various speaker panels I realized that industrial engineering was what I wanted to do. The speakers were pleased to answer student questions and explained the ups and downs and ins and outs of their field,” she says.

“Alums have knowledge to share but often students don’t have the opportunity to speak to them about life after Cal,” says event organizer and Alumni Relations Director Gina Rieger.

Real World Engineering will explore important professional themes that aren’t taught in class. And its student-driven, interactive format will ensure that every student gets his or her concerns addressed.

The sushi reception held after the event will be a great opportunity to mingle with interesting panelists and learn more about opportunities in their field.

Now in its fourth year, Real World Engineering will feature ten panels representing the nine engineering disciplines. And Beyond Engineering will highlight career opportunities outside traditional engineering fields.

“Learning from other people’s experiences is always valuable,” adds Liang.
