Professor Minute: Interview with IEOR professor Dorit Hochbaum

What do you do to forget about engineering and/or work ?

I don't necessarily want to. I like outdoor activities like skiing, biking, and hiking, and indoor activities such as cooking, reading, listening to classical or jazz music, gardening, and spending time at the cafe. Don't tell anyone, but I also like to do the dishes because it lets my mind roam free as no one bothers me (they’re afraid they’ll have to take over if they do). I would be concerned, however, if too many of my ideas are generated at the sink. I usually incorporate engineering into almost all these activities. For example, steepest descent for skiing, optimal selection of gear in biking, and minimum water use in dish washing.

What is your personal recipe for success?

To set my own standards for excellence and be as faithful to them as I can.

What can a student do to get through your hardest class?

By investing in independent thinking and asking lots of questions. I delight in students who ask questions. Critical thinking and taking nothing as given is the best way to learn and be inspired to new discoveries.

Why did you become a professor?

How about not being able to hold onto a real job? (That is a joke!!) Having a job that is also one's hobby is the best one can possibly hope for. Having that, I am very grateful for it.constraint.
