GOTTA HAVE HART: ME junior Woody Hartman says his ultimate dream is to one day own and manage an amusement park like Disney World.

ME student is featured in trade magazine as a “student you’d love to hire”

He’s no William Hung, but ME junior William “Woody” Hartman is no stranger to the spotlight. As a Berkeley freshman he appeared on the college edition of Hollywood Squares.

Now as a junior he’s garnered attention not for his television-ready smile and knowledge of trivia, but for being a professional “catch.”

Hartman was recently featured in the pages of Design News in a section entitled Engineering Students You’d Love to Hire.

True to his reputation, Hartman was, in fact, hired this spring for a manufacturing engineering co-op position with FormFactor in Livermore. There, he is designing and performing experiments with very expensive equipment to determine if using a high-powered, automated microscope will improve the company’s manufacturing processes.

So why is Hartman so hirable?

“I’ve done well academically but beyond that I hope I have the social and the leadership savvy to be effective as more than an engineer, but also as a manager, coordinator and liaison,” he says.

Hartman spent last summer taking business classes at Haas to become a “well-rounded engineer.”

While his pragmatic, engineering tendencies steer him toward getting his M.B.A. and landing a management position in the technology industry, he also harbors a wilder, more adventurous goal.

“My ultimate dream is to design and manage my own theme park. It was my motivation for becoming an engineer. I want to be like Walt Disney or at least work as an “imagineer” at Disney Corp.,” says Hartman.

While jobs at Disney may be hard to get, and amusement parks don’t go on the market every day, Hartman can’t help but think that one day he can make it all happen. But even if his aspirations never become reality, Hartman says he won’t stop thinking about it.

“Darn it, a kid can dream!” he says.
