Brainteaser

Genius Corner: Gain fame by playing our brain game

The Chicken Market

This week’s brainteaser might be tough but don’t be too chicken to try it. The first person to e-mail the right answer will have his or her name printed in the next issue of Engineering News along with the answer. Twice a semester, one of the bi-weekly winners will be picked at random to win two movie tickets, courtesy of Engineering Alumni Relations.

A man took a truckload of chickens to market. In the first hour he sold half of his birds plus half of a chicken. The next hour he sold one-third of a chicken. The third hour he sold one-fourth of what he had left plus three-fourths of a chicken. The last hour he sold one-fifth of the birds plus one-fifth of a chicken. He did not cut up any chickens to make any of these sales. If he returned home with 19 chickens how many did he take to the market?
