Minute with new IEOR assistant professor Max Shen
If you had not decided
to go into engineering, what other career would you have today?
Business management, most likely. In fact, my research is in the area
of supply chain management, which focuses on developing models and tools
to minimize systemwide costs while satisfying service level requirements,
so it's still related.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Maybe spare time is defined differently for junior faculty. It's
rare for me to find a big chunk of free time, but if I happen to have
one, I travel to different places of the world. I have also been trying
to free some time up for exercises every week. I jog around our beautiful
campus and sometimes run up and down the stairs in the football stadium.
How can a student get through your hardest class?
Pay close attention to class discussion, follow with careful review
of the material, ask questions whenever you have any, and try to think
deeper for insights into the problem. You really have to do all the
work; there's no shortcut.
What was your favorite movie last year and why?
I moved twice last year, and I haven't found enough time to enjoy
many movies. Among the ones I watched, I liked Shrek 2. At first I was
a bit disappointed in the ending, but then I realized that it conveys
an important message: Be yourself and be accepted as who you really
are.
What CD are you listening to at the moment? I
usually don't stick to one CD. I listen to all types of music depending
on my mood. I enjoy listening to jazz when I am working, so I mostly
tune into a jazz station while in the office.
