POLITICAL PROBLEM SOLVING: From left, MSE sophomore Peter Chung, ME sophomore Igor Tregub, and ME junior Chris Abad are your ASUC senators. They've been making sure northside engineers stay connected to the southside ASUC hub.

ASUC senators busy with everything from northside business hours to student society funding

Last spring you elected them. Now, almost a year later, what have they done for you? ME junior Chris Abad, MSE sophomore Peter Chung, and ME sophomore Igor Tregub are your distinguished ASUC senators. Their job is to represent engineering students in the ASUC senate as it considers everything from official student bills to how to spend your student fees. For the first time in years, three engineers have been elected to the ASUC senate, giving the college a weightier say in student matters. This past week, Engineering News sat down with each of the senators in Eshleman Hall to find out what they've been working on.

Chris Abad
In the fall, we met with engineering student societies for an "ASUC Resource Session" to show them everything from how to advertise with fliers to how to get funding. I've also helped out with the ASUC website to make it more interactive. But one of the main things I'm working on is getting north
side businesses to stay open later than 8 or 9 p.m. We surveyed 500 students and got the data showing students want this. We brought it to the city, and they're working on a report to share with northside businesses this spring. I'm also producing the "All Perspectives Show" on April 20, which showcases performances from different cultural groups on campus. I've enjoyed being a senator and learned a lot of valuable skills.

Peter Chung
I started something called the Speakers' Bureau this year because I wanted to help student clubs organize speakers and bring more technical speakers like Bill Gates to campus. I've got the foundation of the program started so next year's senators will be able to actually start booking speakers. I've also been focusing on getting more funds for engineering student groups, like the Cal car groups, to make sure those groups stay in the top tier. I've also been trying to look at outside funding for those vehicle groups. I've really loved helping students. If any engineers are interested in running for senate next year, contact me. It would be really good to have three or four engineering senators every year.

Igor Tregub
I helped run the resource session with Chris. I'm also focused on getting engineering students more funding. Engineers make up 14 percent of the campus, but only get 5 percent of ASUC resources. We can definitely improve. I'm also working on putting together Tsunami Relief Week, Feb. 7 to 12. The goal is to get thousands of students to donate and learn more about the disaster and its aftermath. I've really enjoyed serving engineers and students. And as rancorous as the senate gets, I have 19 friends at the end of the day. I would really encourage engineers to run for senate.
