February 21, 2005 Vol. 76, no. 6S Three faculty members elected to NAEThe National Academy of Engineering (NAE) recently elected new members, including three engineering faculty: CS Professor David E. Culler for contributions to scalable parallel processing systems, including architectures, operating systems, and programming environments; EECS professor Roger T. Howe for contributions to the development of microelectromechanical systems in processes, devices, and systems; and Almy and Agnes Maynard ME Professor Arunava Majumdar for contributions to nanoscale thermal engineering and molecular nanomechanics. Two other faculty were also named, ChemE Professor Harvey W. Blanch for scientific, engineering, and educational advances in enzyme engineering, bioseparations, and biothermodynamics; and new foreign associate CS Professor William M. Kahan for the development of techniques for reliable floating point computation, especially the IEEE Floating Point Standards. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded an engineer. |
