Rowdy or artistic, ME 102 projects demonstrate design prowess and technical expertise

Once again, ME 102 students outdid themselves during the ME Design Expo, which took place on December 8. Teams demonstrated their final projects to a stream of fellow engineers, staff and faculty visitors who crowded into the basement of Etcheverry Hall.

“We had lots of good, interesting projects this class,” reports Professor Liwei Lin. Though engineers mobbed one group’s robotic drinking game project (and free beer), here are a few of our favorites:

POWER BARROW

BROUGHT TO YOU BY: ME seniors Mark Chan, Kyle Yeates, Vince Law, Bernd Kamasi, Kirby Chiang, Matt Chen
IN ONE SENTENCE: A power-assist wheelbarrow with cruise control
QUOTE: “It will stay at the same constant speed no matter the pitch of the hill or the size of the load,” says Vince Law. A home improvement hallelujah!

HIT ‘N RUN VIDEO CAPTURING SYSTEM

BROUGHT TO YOU BY: ME seniors Brian Chio, Jourdan Carrido Jr., Steven Do, John Dao, Matteo Rossi
IN ONE SENTENCE: A custom-made system senses when a parked car has been hit, activates a camera to record the offending vehicle’s information and sends a notifying message to the car owner’s cell phone.
QUOTE: “This was my dad’s idea,” says Brian Chio. Bad drivers beware!

THE HARPIE

BROUGHT TO YOU BY: ME seniors Mary Asperger, Jim Gariffo, Earl Kaing, Tessie Lee, Simon Liu, Art Mostofi
IN ONE SENTENCE: Plays a digital music box using a laser pointer
QUOTE: “It’s the musical instrument of the future,” says Art Mostofi.
