In October, ME professor Xiang Zhang’s research group won a R&D Magazine “Micro/ Nano 25 Award” for their demonstration of the first superlens at optical frequencies. The award recognizes the optical superlens as one of the top 25 most innovative nanotechnology products of 2006. The lens allows never-before-seen detail by essentially recovering light waves that are lost in traditional lenses. Zhang’s group, called the XLab, focuses on the development of promising applications in nano-manufacturing, nano-imaging, bio-sensing and energy conversion.
