Gamers descend on Sproul Plaza

GAME BOYS: On March 16, the Computer Science Undergraduates Association sponsored a video game tournament open to all students on Sproul Plaza. Under a canopy, students played ruthless rounds of Soul Calibur III and Tekken 5, both martial arts fighting games, in a single elimination format. Cal’s Tau Beta Pi celebrates 100 years
Honor society offers professional development, social activities and more

When Cal’s chapter of the national engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi (TBP) formed in 1907, Albert Einstein had just introduced his theory of relativity, and the “electric suction sweeper” (aka vacuum cleaner) was making its debut in Ohio. Amidst mind-boggling advancements in engineering since then, California Alpha, as the chapter is called, remains one of Cal’s oldest engineering societies and is still going strong a century later.

“The Cal chapter of Tau Beta Pi (TBP) has represented the best of Berkeley Engineering undergraduates for 100 years,” says Acting Dean Fiona Doyle. “TBP students not only achieve academic excellence but push themselves to be leaders in everything from research to student government to social service. New certificate program aims to create legions of problem solvers working on sustainability

With global warming and the fate of the planet top-of-mind these days, a group of Berkeley professors has launched a new interdisciplinary certificate program to train graduate students in sustainable engineering practices and in managing systems to protect the environment. The Engineering and Business for Sustainability (EBS) Certificate Program begins this fall and is currently under academic review. The launch of the program has been supported by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. [FULL STORY]

Supermileage team gets ready for big race in June
Students hope improved vehicle design will put them in the top three
