Gamers descend on Sproul Plaza

GAME BOYS: On March 16, the Computer Science Undergraduates Association sponsored a video game tournament open to all students on Sproul Plaza. Under a canopy, students played ruthless rounds of Soul Calibur III and Tekken 5, both martial arts fighting games, in a single elimination format. Here, during a brief moment of levity, CS junior Borden Liu (left) and EECS junior Larry Nguyen compete in Tekken 5. Nguyen went on to win the Tekken tournament and took home an iPod Shuffle.

When Cal’s chapter of the national engineering
honor society Tau Beta Pi (TBP) formed in 1907, Albert Einstein had
just introduced his theory of relativity, and the “electric suction
sweeper” (aka vacuum cleaner) was making its debut in Ohio. Amidst
mind-boggling advancements in engineering since then, California Alpha,
as the chapter is called, remains one of Cal’s oldest engineering
societies and is still going strong a century later.
“The Cal chapter of Tau Beta Pi (TBP) has represented the best of Berkeley
Engineering undergraduates for 100 years,” says Acting Dean Fiona Doyle. “TBP
students not only achieve academic excellence but push themselves to be leaders
in everything from research to student government to social service. This is
an incredible legacy. [FULL STORY]
With global warming and the fate of the planet top-of-mind

certificate program to train graduate students in sustainable engineering
practices and in managing systems to protect the environment. The Engineering
and Business for Sustainability (EBS) Certificate Program begins this
fall and is currently under academic review. The launch of the program
has been supported by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. [FULL STORY]
