The phone lady initiative established a decade ago served as inspiration for EECS professor Eric Brewer as he envisioned one of the College's most ambitious endeavors—Information and Communication Technology for Billions, dubbed ICT4B. With Dean Richard Newton and Tom Kalil, the team is dedicated to building an infrastructure that offers people in developing regions new access to technology.

CORRECTION

Last spring, Forefront and the worldwide media reported that the December 2003 earthquake in Bam, Iran, killed 41,000 people. Later, the Iranian government revised the official death toll to 26,000, explaining there had been significant error in accounting for people in the chaos that followed the quake.
