Let there be light
Berkeley’s library is top-ranked among public universities
in North America and third among public and private institutions
(after Harvard and Yale), according to the 2002 Association of
Research Libraries ranking. University Librarian Thomas Leonard
credited Berkeley’s steady climb from fifth place two years
ago to Chancellor Berdahl’s commitment to beef up the collections.
CEE Professor Garrison Sposito, a member of the Academic Senate
Library Committee, says the University library is "the most
important repository for the collective experience of the life
of the mind." Students, faculty, and staff receive priority
access, but library services, including the government document
collection, are always open to the public.
