Student Minute with EECS junior Lei HuangPhoto credit: Rachel Shafer photo Huang is one of 20 engineering upperclassmen who will facilitate E 98 this fall. E 98 is a one-unit, pass/no-pass DeCal course called “Berkeley Engineering: The Survival Guide,” taught by engineering students for engineering students. Intended primarily for first-years, the course provides a comprehensive introduction to Berkeley Engineering. It covers effective study habits, ways to plan a balanced class schedule, activities within and outside of Berkeley Engineering, ways to find summer internships and opportunities to get involved in research. Students will also practice professional development skills. What was your freshman year like? It was an eye opener. My first semester wasn’t as bad as I expected, and I thought to myself, ‘Hey, I can do this college thing.’ But my second semester I took five classes and also had an incredibly social dorm floor. I ended up getting distracted by friends. What was the biggest lesson you learned? I learned how to budget my time more wisely between classes, friends and clubs. I learned to prioritize and figure out what’s most important to me and what I wanted to get out of college. What are some myths about Berkeley Engineering? That it’s really hard. That you won’t see sunlight because you’ll be inside studying so much. That you can’t double major. That you can do it by yourself. That’s the biggest myth. People who do well are always reaching out to others to ask questions and find resources. Go to office hours! We can all be the best together. We can all help each other do well. What advice do you have for freshmen? Don’t think to yourself, ‘I can’t do something because I’m just a freshman.’ For example, if you want to do research as a freshman, you should pursue it. The College’s Undergrad-uate Research Opportunities program is a good place to start. Why take E 98? We’re not going to tell you how to make friends or get
straight A’s. But it’s nice to have a mentor, and that’s where we come in. E 98
is a mentoring system. You’ll meet people just like you and hear from people
who’ve already gone through a couple years at Berkeley. You don’t have to learn the hard
way if you don’t want to! Website: Register now https://telebears.berkeley.edu/! |
