Engineering women get tough

“Shattering the Glass Ceiling: Career Advancement for Women Engineers,” kicks off the new seminar series called “Mental Toughness: Women in Engineering” at 5 p.m. January 30 in 290 Hearst Memorial Mining Building. Panelists include Rula Deeb of Malcolm Pirnie, Inc.; Marie Anne Niemat of Oracle; Nina Taft of Intel Research Lab; and May Su of Aviza Technology. Fran Allen, IBM T.J. Watson Research Emerita, will moderate as the speakers share success stories and strategies for advancement in industry.

Put on a fat suit for E-Week

2008 Engineers Week is just one month away, scheduled for February 19 through 22. In past years students have enjoyed barbecues, date auctions, nerd contests and sumo wrestling in fat suits. All engineering student societies are encouraged to help host events throughout the week to make it one of Cal’s best E-Weeks ever! Anyone wanting to help out should contact Q.J. Flores at vp@ejc.berkeley.edu.

EECS internship fair next week

The EECS Department presents its 2008 Internship Open House from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, January 24, in the Betty and Gordon Moore Lobby, Hearst Memorial Mining Building. The EECS Internship Program places top Berkeley EE and CS majors in competitive and exciting summer assignments in industry. The aim is to develop challenging work assignments for undergraduates, and although the program has an EE and CS focus, it is open to Berkeley graduate and undergraduate students in any field. Internships allow students to develop professionally, experience the corporate environment, gain hands-on experiences and work with well-known engineers and scientists.
