Academic Advising is key to a successful undergraduate experience. Every College of Engineering student is assigned an academic adviser upon admission. This person is called your ESS Engineering Student Services (ESS) Adviser. Advisers are assigned based upon your last name and work with you throughout your entire undergraduate career. Note: Students admitted as Undeclared work with a designated adviser until they declare at which point their ESS adviser will be based on their last name.
ESS advisers are available to provide assistance with routine to complex matters related to your undergraduate education . They answer questions regarding degree and graduation requirements, policy and procedure, and forms/petitions. They assist with academic planning, academic difficulties or concerns and make referrals to campus resources. They are here to offer guidance and support throughout your undergraduate studies.

Advising is available on an appointment only basis with the exception of Wednesdays, which are reserved for drop-in advising.
Appointments:
Appointments may be made using our online appointments system or by calling (510) 642-7594 during business hours. Scheduled appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9-11:45 and 1-3:45.
Please be on time to your appointment. If you are more than five minutes late, you will have to reschedule.
Drop-in:
There is drop-in advising every Wednesday from 9:30-11:45am and 1-3:30pm. Come to Engineering Student Services in 230 Bechtel Engineering Center and sign in at the front desk. Drop-in advising is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Waiting times may vary dramatically on Wednesdays depending on demand. It's always better to make an appointment if possible

Who is my ESS adviser?
ESS adviser assignments are based upon last name unless you are Engineering-Undeclared. Undeclared students see our specialized undeclared adviser, Mary Howell, until declaration of major.
