Pre-Engineering Program (PREP)
The Pre-Engineering Program (PREP) provides incoming engineering students with a competitive edge by jumpstarting their UC Berkeley engineering experience.
The Summer Immersion Program
PREP, which has been offered for over 20 years, begins with an intensive eleven-day, residential academic session held annually in August. Though the cost of the Program has increased to approximately $1,500 per student, PREP continues to be offered at no cost to its participants due to generous support from industry (Boeing, Lockheed Martin), alumni supporters (RECARE Foundation), and the College of Engineering. The purpose of the summer immersion program is to provide incoming students with insight into the rigors of the first-semester engineering curriculum at UC Berkeley. Our engineering program challenges students to work harder, think creatively, and learn in new and unfamiliar ways. PREP consists of rigorous preparation in calculus and physics, which will provide participants with the hands-on experience in group study and problem solving that will be transferable to the students’ future coursework. During the program, students also participate in seminars in academic advising, financial aid, professional development and undergraduate research, as well as workshops that will help students master study skills and time management.
The most important component of PREP is that it provides new first-year students with the collaborative learning techniques that they will need to successfully navigate Berkeley's demanding engineering curriculum. From study groups to competition teams, Berkeley engineers must work together to solve complex problems. "PREPpies" quickly learn that they are one another's best resource and the close bonds that they form during the intensive summer program provide them with a solid support network.
When Will PREP Occur?
PREP is a year-long Program that begins with an 11-day intensive summer institute. The PREP 2013 Summer Institute will take place from August 13 through August 23. Students selected to attend PREP are required to participate in the entire program, and exceptions to this will not be permitted since it will be disruptive to the program’s learning and community environment. At the conclusion of the PREP program, participants will be able to move into their assigned residence hall rooms for the academic year (one full day earlier than all other new first-year students!).
Who Can Apply for PREP?
All incoming first-year students (including undocumented students) are invited to apply for the program, though the program will focus on the academic issues facing students from groups who:
How to Apply for PREP
Students must submit an online application. The selection process for the 2013 cohort is now closed.
PREP Student Testimonials
“New freshmen for Fall 2011 should apply for PREP because this program thoroughly builds a strong foundation for all engineers.” –Matt Roeschke (PREP ’10)
"PREP helped me to learn not only the rigors of the engineering curricula, but skills such as collaboration and responsibility that are critical for success at Berkeley." –Shamn Singh (PREP '10)
“Being a part of the PREP family made Cal feel much less intimidating, and it made the transition from high school to college easy! I also feel that I was more prepared than my classmates for our lower division courses (math, physics, and chemistry).” –Lisa Veliz (PREP ’06)
“This program helped prepare me in how difficult college classes are (especially in comparison to high school!), teaching me how to balance different obligations, and introduced me to other students that I could form study groups with and long-lasting friendships.” –Justine Velasco (PREP ’07)
“The friends I made at PREP were the friends I had in all my classes. We helped each other with problems, we all studied and hung out together, and best of all, I already had great friends at the beginning of the year that were going through the same stuff as me. They are still my friends and will be for life.” –Hilary Raya (PREP ’08)
