Pre-Engineering Program (PREP)

Get a jumpstart on your Berkeley engineering experience through the Pre-Engineering Program (PREP). PREP provides incoming, first year engineering students with a competitive edge through interactive coursework, access to advising staff, and meeting your peers before the fall semester begins. Become a “PREPpy” for life and form close bonds that will help you succeed at Berkeley and beyond.

What are our goals for PREP?

When you finish PREP you will:

  • Have insight into the rigors of UC Berkeley coursework – specifically focusing on Calculus and Physics
  • Network with fellow incoming freshmen
  • Receive hands-on experience in group study, problem solving and time management
  • Learn what Engineering Student Services offers to make the most of your time at Berkeley, including: Academic Advising, Leadership and Professional development and undergraduate research.

What is PREP like?

PREP is an intensive program designed to immerse students into the rigors of their first semester at Cal. Below is a typical schedule* for one day in the program:

7:30 – 8:15am – Breakfast
8:30 – 10:00am – Physics
10:15 – 11:45am – Math
12:00 – 1:00pm – Lunch
1:15 – 2:15pm – Workshop
2:30 – 3:30 – Physics Discussion
3:45 – 4:45pm – Math Discussion
4:45 – 6:00pm – Free Time
6:00 – 7:00pm – Dinner
7:15 – 7:45pm – Small Group Reflection
7:45 – 10:00pm – Study Time

*actual schedule may vary

Is PREP for you?

All incoming first-year students (including undocumented) are invited to apply for PREP.  The program focuses on the academic issues facing students from groups who are:

  • Members of a group historically underrepresented in the field of engineering
  • From low income or first generation backgrounds

When is PREP?

PREP is a year long experience that begins with eleven days, August 12 to August 22.  You have to be able to attend for the entire eleven days – no exceptions.

What is the cost of PREP?

PREP will cost you NOTHING. Through the generous support of our sponsors (Boeing, Lockheed Martin, RECARE Foundation and College of Engineering) PREP is free to all participants.  Lodging, food, books and class time is all provided for you. A small amount of spending money is all you will need.

How to apply?

Thank you for your interest in PREP.  Applications for the 2014-2015 year have closed.
