Change of College

Application Periods

Applications may be submitted once each semester during a designated period:

  • Fall 2011 Semester: the first day of instruction through October 1st  for admission to that same fall semester
  • Spring Semester: the first week of instruction through March 1 for admission to that same spring semester

Late applications will not be accepted.

Notification decisions for many students will occur after November 20th (fall applicant) or April 20th (spring applicant). Freshmen applicants (applied during their second semester) will be notified several weeks after the conclusion of the semester in which they applied (approximately June 20th for Spring and January 20th for Fall). Please do not contact the office during the application review period. You will be notified as soon as a decision has been reached.

Application Criteria

Applicants will be considered for a Change of College to a major in the College of Engineering  if they meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of two semesters of coursework at UC Berkeley. (Freshman may apply during their second semester if the requisite coursework listed below is completed or in progress).
  • Satisfactory academic progress towards completion of requirements for selected major.  For all majors other than EECS this includes completion of Math 1A and 1B, Chem 1A and 1AL, Physics 7A, and a minimum of two (2) additional letter graded technical courses required for the selected major. (Students applying as sophomores would need to complete all courses listed above plus a requisite number of additional courses to be on track for that major.)
    • EECS applicants applying as freshmen must have completed a minimum of six technical courses required of the major including: Math 1A and 1B; Physics 7A; two courses from: CS 61A, CS 61B,
CS 61C, EE20N, EE 40; and one additional technical course required of the major.   Students applying in their third semester must have completed all the above plus Physics 7B, Math 53 and one additional course from: CS 61A, CS 61B, CS 61C, EE 20N, EE 40. Students applying in their fourth semester need all of the above plus Math 54 and one more from CS 61A-EE40 list.
EECS applicants MUST have a minimum technical GPA of 3.2 to apply. Students with less than a 3.2 GPA in technical courses are not eligible. The actual GPA required for admissions may be much greater than 3.2; 3.2 is the minimum required for application.
    • IEOR applicants must complete 2 letter-graded math courses at UCB to be eligible to apply.  This two course requirement cannot be met with AP, IB or Standard Level exam scores.
    • Whenever possible, for majors that require Engineering 7 and 10, these courses should be completed before applying. Eng 10 is restricted in Fall semesters to students in Engineering; applicants need to enroll in this class in a Spring term.  Eng 7 is restricted in Spring semesters to students in Engineering; applicants need to enroll in this class in a Fall or Summer term
  • Ability to complete the degree within four (4) years or eight (8) total semesters.
  • Submission of a personal statement explaining motivation and preparation for pursuing a degree in Engineering and why you selected the major you did.
  • Submission of a semester by semester planned program, including units in progress.
  • For all majors other than EECS, a technical GPA of at least 2.50.  Students with less than a 2.5 technical GPA are not eligible to apply to any major in the College of Engineering.  Note: most majors will require a GPA much higher than 2.5 for admission.
  • Students applying to EECS must have a technical GPA of at least 3.2.
Students with less than a 3.2 in their technical coursework are not eligible for admission to EECS.
  • Transfer students are not eligible to apply for change of college into Engineering.
  • Apply by no later than your fourth semester of college enrollment and apply no more than two times total.   (Fifth semester applications will be accepted through December 2011. Effective Spring 2012, students must apply by no later than their fourth semester. )

NOTE: ADMISSION IS LIMITED AND COMPETETIVE

Admission depends not just on completion of required courses with the minimum GPA, but also on space availability in the major you are applying to in our College.  Most programs in the College of Engineering are very impacted and as a result seats in Engineering courses are reserved for students accepted to our College as freshman or transfer applicants. It is difficult for students not in the College of Engineering to get a seat in our courses which makes an application for change of college challenging. To be admitted as a change of college applicant, a student must have completed (at a minimum) the prescribed freshman engineering curriculum. Since availability in these courses for non-Engineering students is very limited, it may not be possible to meet the minimum requirements for consideration.   There is a process for applying to change college but given the highly impacted status of majors in the College of Engineering, no guarantee of the possibility that a student could enroll in the courses required to be considered.

Ready to apply?

Activate your request to change to Engineering by accessing the online website to give the College your contact information.

(The online application will collect your name and intended major, however  you will also have to submit all the necessary application materials included in the above link: Thinking about applying to the College of Engineering. Please attend a college workshop for more information.)

Print out the  Major Worksheet, Application Worksheet and Semester planning form which are part of the final application.  Begin writing your personal statement well before the application deadline, and if you'd like, bring it to a workshop for review and comment.  Once you add your name and contact informationto the online application, follow the Student Instructions page and return your completed forms to 230 Bechtel Engineering Center (see one of the Peer Advisers or drop it off at one of the workshops).
