Why Berkeley Engineers Succeed

UC Berkeley College of Engineering students are some of the best and brightest from across the country and throughout the world, so they already have a head start at success. As a Berkeley Engineering student, you will also have access to a wide range of services and resources that will help you excel, complete your degree and get that first job!

Here’s just a list of some of these:

Students and Professors in LabStudent Involvement: More than 25 student societies provide peer guidance and activities for engineering undergrads. They include Berkeley chapters of Tau Beta Pi national engineering society, Eta Kappa Nu electrical engineering society, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Biomedical Engineering Society and many others.

Research opportunities: If you are seeking research experience, you can get help from the Undergraduate Research Opportunities (URO) Program, which links faculty with students in appropriate areas of study. These experiences not only enrich your learning experience but also provide valuable practical training for future employment and give you a sense of what life will be like in the field of engineering.

Robot RivalsCool student projects: Berkeley Engineering students are always working on some of the coolest projects on campus! You can focus your activities outside the classroom on a variety of projects to hone your practical know-how and team-building skills, including the Formula SAE car, the Concrete Canoe, solar-powered and autonomous vehicles.

Advising: When admitted as an undergraduate, you are assigned student and faculty advisors  to assist with academic matters and guide you in your selection of coursework and other activities in your chosen field. Advisors are also available at the departmental level for specific assistance with programs, faculty contacts, tutoring, alumni mentorship, student buddies and other services.

Students on campusCenter for Underrepresented Engineering Students (CUES): A nationally recognized program for recruiting and retaining underrepresented students, CUES can provide counseling and peer support for women and other underrepresented minorities in the engineering student body.

Campus Career Center: Career fairs abound during the school year, with about 400 companies offering events, including specialized activities for EECS, CEE and BioE majors cosponsored by student organizations. The College of Engineering also offers extensive alumni and professional networking services.

Financial aid: Of Berkeley Engineering undergraduates, nearly 70 percent receive financial aid in the form of scholarships, work study arrangements and loans.

Student employment: Approximately 61 percent of students work while earning their undergraduate degree, an average of 12 hours weekly.

SeminarOrganized research units: Dozens of engineering centers provide a hub for research in areas like green technology, health care, earthquake engineering, microfabrication and nanotechnology. Other centers like CET, the Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology, and GLOBE, Global Learning & Outreach from Berkeley Engineering, offer special opportunities in fostering startups and international outreach.

Engineering News: Our biweekly student newsletter, Engineering News, gives you a regularly scheduled wealth of information on events, services, interesting student organizations and classes, your fellow students, engineering faculty and other great things going on at the college.

Study abroad: International education is a great way to broaden your education, enhance both your personal and academic growth and develop a global view of engineering. If you are interested in studying abroad, there are many opportunities and resources for you.
