Berkeley Engineering's newest department, the Department of Bioengineering,
is at the forefront of a major movement to improve health and human
productivity. Advances in medicine and the successful, seamless integration
of biology and modern engineering will lead major breakthroughs — ranging from the design of drugs customized to an individual's genome
to the perfection of artificial implantable organs to the eventual
replacement of damaged or diseased bone, cartilage, and other tissues
with newly engineered materials. Many of these breakthroughs, which
will lead to longer, healthier, and more productive lives, will be
pioneered at Berkeley.
The
Department of Bioengineering at Berkeley merges leadership and talents
found in the College of Engineering with:
-
the physical and biological sciences at Berkeley
-
the biological and health sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and
-
the assets of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
With these partners, Berkeley's Department of Bioengineering is
uniquely positioned to lead the nation in advancing this new mode
of medicine.
