Why Berkeley?Students have been choosing Berkeley for its unparalleled engineering education since the university was chartered in 1868. Although much has changed since then, one constant has remained: Berkeley Engineering’s distinguished teaching and research reputation attracts the best students from the state, the nation and around the world. Learn for yourself why so many students have decided that Berkeley is their choice:
World-class facultyWith members of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences, National Medal of Science winners and recipients of the Turing Award, Berkeley Engineering faculty are not only distinguished by their commitment to scholarship, but also for their innovative thinking and teaching that advance the understanding and improvement of our world. Leading-edge research and innovationBerkeley Engineering professors are at the forefront of engineering innovation and discovery. Students can participate in a wide range of research projects outside of the classroom, starting at the undergraduate level. Many of the laboratories, libraries and specialized equipment used to conduct groundbreaking research are also available to Berkeley Engineering students. Engaged and diverse studentsBerkeley draws students from throughout California, all other 49 states and more than 100 foreign countries. These students, distinguished by their academic and extracurricular successes, share talent, drive and the desire to meet academic challenges. Berkeley is also remarkable in that no single racial, ethnic or cultural group forms a majority of it students. The College believes that a broad diversity of student experiences, backgrounds, interests and strengths enhances the educational experience of its students. Seven engineering departmentsEach of the College’s seven departments represents a separate field of engineering, with its own faculty and areas of specialization. Whether you see yourself as a creator of structures, designer of electrical circuits or a builder of operation systems, Berkeley Engineering has a major that is right for you. Marketable degreeBerkeley is the world’s premier public university, according to the annual rankings by U.S. News & World Report, and Berkeley Engineering maintains a top-three ranking among engineering programs nationally, public or private. Berkeley’s reputation for excellence draws hundreds of recruiters, hoping to employ talented new graduates, to campus each spring. Other grads pursue advanced degrees; in fact, more Berkeley undergraduates go on to earn a Ph.D. than graduates of any other college or university. High valueComparing Berkeley to Ivy League or other selective private institutions, there can be a significant difference when it comes to cost and financial assistance. Fully 65 percent of undergraduate engineers receive grants, scholarships, loans or other financial aid. Berkeley financial aid offers are designed to meet full need (as determined by federal guidelines) to make sure that college is accessible and affordable. Student lifeThere is no such thing as a typical day at Berkeley, where you can attend a lecture by a Nobel laureate, attend a concert at the historic Greek Theatre, attend a Cal Bears football game or visit Berkeley’s famous Gourmet Ghetto. And there are more than 50 undergraduate engineering student organizations and competition teams that students can join, in addition to several hundred more campus organizations and groups. The campus also boasts excellent sports and recreational facilities, as well as a wide range of housing choices, including new and newly-renovated dormitories, student apartments and cooperatives. Bay Area locationBerkeley and the Bay Area form an extraordinary environment for all types of educational, artistic and recreational pursuits. Visitors around the world are drawn here by its natural beauty, temperate climate, and cosmopolitan population. Home to the Silicon Valley, three national laboratories and some of the world’s most innovative thinkers, the San Francisco region also creates one of the best environments for an aspiring engineer.
