The Campaign for Berkeley EngineeringMaking a World of Difference From the DeanOur partnership with the College’s alumni and friends has shaped our reputation as the world’s No. 1 public engineering school. However, our true measures are our private peers, led by MIT and Stanford. We are their equal in all respects but one: the level of resources available to invest in engineering talent and create solutions to pressing global challenges. To secure our strengths for the future—and to sustain leadership and innovation in the public domain—we are now asking even more of our partners. On September 19, 2008, UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau announced the launch of The Campaign for Berkeley. The aim is simple: to advance the excellence and promise of the world’s preeminent public teaching and research university. The campuswide goal of $3 billion includes $300 million for the College of Engineering. What difference will these gifts make? Our Campaign for Berkeley Engineering positions us to succeed in the fierce competition for top faculty. It creates more opportunities for our students to excel in their studies and in the practice of leadership. Finally, it provides the programs and facilities that foster the technological innovation we need to drive economic productivity and make the world a healthier, safer place. Showcased in our campaign are four strategic initiatives, illustrated here. These initiatives will reinforce our core strengths in teaching and research to make a tangible and beneficial impact on our world. On these fronts and throughout the College, you can join with us in realizing this vision. I welcome your thoughts at Dean_Sastry@coe.berkeley.edu. Sincerely, S. Shankar Sastry ’79, ’80, ’81
Educating Global Technology LeadersWe aim to educate and inspire leaders for the global economy who can marshal strong entrepreneurial and communication skills to match technological depth. Our Technology & Leadership Studies program, for example, offers courses and hands-on workshops specializing in technology innovation and entrepreneurship for more than 3,000 students each year.
Engineering Sustainable Energy SolutionsWe are committed to finding energy solutions that sustain economic growth while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We believe than an integration of renewable energy, more efficient combustion and related strategic technologies will complement upcoming advances in biofuels. Projects underway range from solar fuel cells and “smart” automobile engines to power-aware buildings and better mass transit options.
Engineering Better HealthHealth care, in the United States and worldwide, is long overdue for profound improvements. The intersection of engineering, biology and clinical practice offers tremendous potential. Our focus areas include early disease detection, stem-cell therapies and technologies that allow people to monitor their health at home, along with scalable mechanisms for reducing costs and improving access. We also seek to make key contributions to systems and synthetic biology.
Engineering a Better WorldWe believe the best new technologies can improve the lot of people around the world. Mobile technologies, for example, carry tremendous potential for benefiting education, communication, health care, the environment and ultimately our quality of life. And in the Blum Center for Developing Economies, we are using new nanotechnologies to remove contaminants such as arsenic from drinking water, thus helping to provide low-cost solutions for safe water in urban slums and rural villages.
How You Can Make a DifferenceThis campaign offers our College’s alumni and friends many opportunities to invest and make a lasting impact. Your generosity will support all that Berkeley Engineering does to fulfill its mission: Educating Leaders, Creating Knowledge and Serving Society. We offer opportunities to give in the following areas: Berkeley Engineering Annual Fund Educating Global Technology Leaders
Engineering Sustainable Energy Solutions Gifts designated for these strategic imperatives will help to foster innovation and amplify its impact on pressing global challenges.
